Siberian

Why Siberian?

There is something quietly magical about the Siberian cat - majestic, affectionate, and full of soul. Originating from the snowy forests of Russia, this breed combines natural elegance with a warm, loyal personality that makes them one of the most loving companions you could ever welcome into your home.

Siberians’ playful nature, soft gaze, and comforting presence explains why these cats are so cherished by families around the world.

Their Story

The Siberian is an ancient natural breed that evolved in the harsh climates of Russia, where only the toughest and most adaptable cats thrived. Over centuries, their luxurious triple-layered coat developed to protect them from the freezing cold, while their gentle and friendly nature made them a beloved part of family homes.

They are also famously known as one of the most hypoallergenic cat breeds due to lower levels of the Fel d 1 protein produced that triggers allergies in humans. For many cat lovers who are allergic to cats, Siberians may be suitable to be part of their family.

Appearance

Siberians are medium to large cats with strong, muscular bodies and a regal presence. Their thick coats are semi-long and water-resistant, with a full ruff around the neck and a magnificent plumed tail.

They come in a wide range of colours and patterns, from golden and silver shades to tabby, solid, and colourpoint variations.

Common Colors:

  • Solid: Black, Blue (gray), Red (orange), Cream

  • White-based: White, Bi-color combinations (white with black, blue, red, etc.)

  • Tabby Colors: Brown, Silver, Blue, Red, Cream

Patterns:

  • Classic/Blotched Tabby: Swirling patterns on the body

  • Mackerel Tabby: Narrow stripes running down the sides

  • Spotted Tabby: Spots instead of stripes

  • Ticked Tabby: Each hair banded with multiple colors, giving a “salt-and-pepper” look

  • Bi-color / Van: White with color patches (Van has only color on head and tail)

  • Smoke: Base hair white with darker tips

  • Shaded / Tipped: Lighter undercoat with darker tips, giving a shimmering effect

Average Weight:

  • Males: 6–8 kg

  • Females: 4–6 kg

Their large, expressive eyes, often green, gold, or blue seem to look right into your heart, reflecting both intelligence and warmth.

Personality

Siberians are wonderfully balanced cats, gentle yet adventurous, independent yet deeply affectionate. They are known for being dog-like in loyalty, often following you from room to room and greeting you with soft chirps or purrs.

They love being part of family life, playing with children, getting along with other pets, and joining in on whatever you are doing. They are also known for their love of water and the outdoors. Many Siberian cat owners bring their cats for leisure walks and even on hiking trails!

Grooming & Coat Care

Despite their thick, triple-layered coat, Siberians are surprisingly low maintenance. Their fur naturally resists matting and repels dirt, thanks to its unique texture.

Recommended grooming routine:

  • Brush 2–3 times a week (best daily!)

  • Use a metal comb or slicker brush to reach the undercoat

  • Daily teeth brushing helps keep plaque and tartar away

  • Regular nail trimming, ear cleaning, paw pads and sanitary area trimming

Compatibility

If you are looking for a cat that is affectionate, playful, and wonderful with children or other pets, the Siberian is a perfect match. They adapt easily to busy households or calm apartments and have an easygoing temperament that fits almost any lifestyle.

Because they are less likely to trigger allergic reactions, they are especially suitable for families where someone has mild cat allergies.

Diet & Nutrition

Siberians are active and strong, so they thrive on a protein-rich diet that supports their muscle and coat health.

Choose premium food with real meat as the main ingredient, and ensure they always have fresh water available.

They can enjoy some raw or gently cooked meat if prepared safely. A mix of wet and dry food helps maintain hydration and dental health.

They can benefit from omega-3 or salmon oil supplements for maintaining a healthy coat.

They also enjoy a mix of puzzle feeders and play-based feeding, which keeps their minds sharp and bodies healthy.

Health & Wellness

Siberians are a robust, natural breed with few inherited health problems. However, responsible breeders still screen for:

  • Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) – a heart condition that is largely hereditary

  • Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) – a kidney disease that is largely a genetic condition

At The Cats Collective, our Siberian parents/ancestry are health-tested and cleared of these genetic conditions. They are also registered with reputable cat associations like GCCF and NZCF, ensuring your kitten comes from healthy, ethically bred lines.

Why We Love Siberians (and You Will Too)

Siberians are more than just beautiful cats, they are soulful companions who bring warmth, laughter, and love wherever they go.

They will greet you at the door, curl up beside you at night, and make you smile every single day. Their loyalty and playfulness make them perfect for anyone looking for a loving, intelligent companion who truly feels like family.
