Maine Coon

Why Maine Coon?

The Gentle Giant with a Heart of Gold.

There is something majestic yet comforting about the Maine Coon.
They are often called the “gentle giants” of the cat world, with their impressive size, bushy tails, and warm, loyal personalities. But beyond their regal looks, Maine Coons are affectionate, intelligent companions who fill your home with love, playfulness, and gentle purrs.

At The Cats Collective, Maine Coons have a very special place in our hearts, because our second cat was a Maine Coon. He was the one who showed us just how loving, expressive, and loyal this breed can be. From his curious nature to his soft chirps and cuddles, he became the heart of our home and the reason we fell deeply in love with this incredible breed.

Their Story

The Maine Coon is one of the oldest natural cat breeds in North America, with roots tracing back to the U.S. state of Maine, where they were prized as farm and ship cats for their hunting skills and rugged beauty.

Their thick, water-resistant coats and tufted ears helped them adapt to cold climates, while their friendly temperament made them beloved companions. Over time, they became known not only for their size but also for their intelligence and easygoing nature.

Today, Maine Coons are adored around the world for their striking appearance and affectionate, dog-like loyalty.

Appearance

Maine Coons are large, muscular cats with a proud stance and a beautifully long, flowing coat. Their tails are thick and plumed, their ears tufted like a lynx, and their eyes expressive, full of curiosity and warmth.

They come in a wide variety of colours and patterns, including tabby, solid, tortie, and shaded.

Average Weight:

  • Males: 7-11 kg (some can grow even larger!)

  • Females: 5–7 kg

Did you know? Maine Coons are one of the largest domestic cat breeds in the world!

Despite their impressive size, Maine Coons are graceful and gentle, often described as having the heart of a kitten inside a lion’s body.

Personality

Maine Coons are known for their loyal, friendly, dog-like nature. They love being part of family life, following you from room to room, chirping softly to “talk” to you, and joining in whatever you are doing.

They are affectionate without being clingy, playful without being destructive, and incredibly good-natured. They get along wonderfully with children, dogs, and other cats.

Our own Maine Coon taught us that they are not just cats, they are companions who form deep, lifelong bonds. Whether they are curling up beside you or greeting you at the door, their presence makes every day a little brighter.

Grooming & Care

With their thick, luxurious and triple-coated fur, Maine Coons do need a bit more grooming, but we like to think of it as bonding time.

Their fur is soft and flowing, with a mane-like ruff around the neck and feathered tails and paws. While it rarely mats if cared for regularly, brushing helps keep them looking magnificent.

Our grooming routine for our Maine Coons:

  • Brush daily, focusing on the belly and armpit areas which are prone to get mats

  • Daily teeth brushing helps keep plaque and tartar away

  • Regular nail trimming, ear cleaning, paw pads and sanitary area trimming

Compatibility

Maine Coons are ideal for anyone who wants a cat that is gentle, affectionate, intelligent, and easy to live with.

They are perfect for:

  • Families with kids or other pets

  • Busy households (they adapt well!)

  • Cat lovers who want an interactive, loyal pet that can be even be leashed walk outdoors

  • Anyone who appreciates a calm yet playful nature

Maine Coons love to be near their humans, they will nap beside you, follow you around, and even “talk” to you with their sweet, chirpy voices.

Diet & Nutrition

Maine Coons grow slowly and need a protein-rich diet to support their bone and muscle development. Choose premium food with real meat as the main ingredient, and ensure they always have fresh water available.

They can enjoy some raw or gently cooked meat if prepared safely. A mix of wet and dry food helps maintain hydration and dental health.

They can benefit from omega-3 or salmon oil supplements for maintaining a healthy coat.

Health & Wellness

Maine Coons are generally hardy, but they can be predisposed to a few genetic conditions, including:

  • Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) – a heart condition that is largely hereditary that ethical breeders screen for

  • Hip Dysplasia – more common in larger cats (weight control is important)

  • Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) – a rare genetic disorder

At The Cats Collective, our Maine Coon parents/ancestry are health-tested and cleared of these genetic conditions. They are also registered with reputable cat associations like GCCF and NZCF, ensuring your kitten comes from healthy, ethically bred lines.
